This formula provides retinyl palmitate, the stable esterified storage form of preformed vitamin A, in an oil-based softgel for optimal fat-soluble absorption. Retinyl palmitate is hydrolyzed to retinol in the intestinal mucosa, then converted as needed to retinoic acid (the active hormone-like form) that binds retinoic acid receptors (RAR) and retinoid X receptors (RXR) to regulate gene expression controlling immune cell differentiation, epithelial development, and mucosal barrier maintenance.*
